Margate Winter Gardens

Management of the Margate Winter Gardens returned to Thanet District Council in August 2022. Bookings at the venue have since temporarily ceased. This is so that an appraisal of the building, which requires significant investment and repair, can take place.  

As part of the Margate Town Deal, we asked for some funding to support the development of a long-term plan for the Margate Winter Gardens. As a result, £300,000 has been allocated for the Margate Town Deal Winter Gardens project.

The funding will be used to examine the structure of the building and to commission an evening and night time economy review and strategy for Thanet, to support the Winter Gardens’ position in considering options for the venue’s future.

This first phase of studies will help us to go out to the marketplace and see what interest there is for leisure provision at the Margate Winter Gardens in the future.

We know that the Winter Gardens is close to the hearts of many people within the local community. And, that people want to ask questions about what the future might look like for the venue.

While we aren’t able to answer individual questions asked on this platform, we will review all of them. This will help us to get a better picture of what people most want information about.

We will use the most asked questions to guide what we include in the FAQ section on the Margate Town Deal project page - updating it with the things our community most wants to know.

Inside the Winter Gardens - video

In December we invited local people to share the questions that they had about the future of the Margate Winter Gardens with us. This was to help us make sure the next round of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on our website addressed the things people most wanted to know.

Thank you so much to everyone who signed up to this platform and shared their questions, added their own comment or upvoted something somebody else had already said. Overall more than 130 people contributed and between them there were over 200 questions submitted.

In this phase we are working through them all, identifying which questions were the most frequently asked and preparing the updated FAQ which will be published on our main website.

In the interim, we've produced a short video; Inside the Winter Gardens which features key councillors and officers giving background information on where things are with the venue. It answers some of the questions people have been asking about the ambitions for the space and what’s happening while bookings are paused.
