Parking in Thanet

In December 2023 we announced plans to create a new parking strategy for Thanet. One that sets out the future of parking requirements for the whole of the district, balancing residents’ needs with growing visitor numbers.

As part of this, specialist highway and transportation consultants were appointed to prepare a strategic review of parking across the district.

The consultants analysed parking data and an engagement exercise followed. This was to gather feedback from members of the public.

A number of engagement events were held during the development phase of the strategy. The sessions were a mix of virtual and in-person meetings, with some open to the general public. Targeted stakeholder sessions were also held, involving local businesses and Councillors.

Phase one included surveys for residents and businesses. It was open until Sunday 10 March 2024.

The Phase two survey ran from Monday 15 July to Sunday 1 September 2024.

We are now asking for feedback on the draft Residential Parking Policy. The survey will be open from Friday 21 November to Friday 19 December 2025.

This is the second stage of consultation on the draft policy recommendations for the parking strategy.

Specifically, it involved a further survey that outlined the recommendations/policies for inclusion in the draft strategy document.

The survey contained 22 questions across five pages.

The survey provided residents and businesses in Thanet with the chance to give their opinions on the various points outlined, with a specific focus on understanding the level of support for each recommendation/policy.

Karen 2 years ago Parking is extremely difficult, especially after 5pm. People from Ramsgate Road and hospital workers take up our spaces.Is putting a bin and bollard outside your house to keep a parking spot allowed/legal? This is what one neighbour does!There are some flats in the adjacent road with lots of empty parking spaces to the rear which are never used. I would willingly pay for a permit to park there, especially on dark winter nights, for peace of mind and safety.Could this be considered?

Helen Jones2 years ago I was born in Ramsgate and moved away at 18 and returned at 51. During this time away I have seen a lot of changes. One thing has been constant. Inconsistent parking. Parking on pavements, corners of roads, double yellow lines. No one has common sense on the roads. General bad driving habits. There are no traffic police so with no penalty people continue to drive and park irresponsibly. The roads of Thanet are narrow in places and I feel this is one of the hardest places that I have been to drive safely.

lesley loren2 years ago Residence only parking in streets close to the Broadstairs High Street, and a limit on the number vehicles per household that can be parked in the street. As an example, there are 13 spaces on the road in my street, and one household parks up to 5 cars, another home has 3 cars and a dropped curb, plus there are 2 large airbnbs that also take up the limited spaces at weekends. Other streets nearby and close to the High Street also share the same problems.

N A2 years ago I'm seeing double yellows on roads that have been fine for the last 20 years. Traffic calming going up in places that is unnecessary. Ringgo taking over every parking opportunity. Thanet councillors are sell outs. We had road works put up in a built up area in Ramsgate for "pot holes". As soon as the road was shut off we had ticket wardens here daily to cash in. The works was there for several weeks and was the least important problem we have on the roads. Southern water had to dig the entire road up a couple meters down to fix a leak and was in and out within a few days. This is the difference between someone who is incompetent at spending our roads budget before the cut off date and someone who actually has a job to do.If Thanet doesn't spend their budget they shouldn't have poor attempts to redirect that money back to themselves.

Jane R2 years ago Because the cost of parking in car parks is so high, visitors park in the roads nearby. Using Cannon Road Car Park in Ramsgate as an example, residents have to pay for a car park season ticket because visitors/local workers take so much of the street parking. If you are lucky enough to park near your house, then leave for even a short while, you can guarantee someone will have taken that space when you return. Why don’t you introduce residents-only parking in Cannon Road and Chapel Place? And in roads adjacent to other car parks? Say, one low price permit for the first car, a slightly higher price for a second car with a higher charge for vans. At same time, offer a reduced price car park season ticket team for local workers, teachers, etc. The Council would probably make more money anyway, if they charged less to park in car parks, thereby reducing the tendency of drivers to search for parking on neighbouring streets.

D Ro2 years ago Parking is ridiculous and ridiculously getting worse. St pauls road Cliftonville is becoming a night mare. This should be made into permit holders only. As we have to contend with the community center visitors and the play school that is held there week days also the clinic that is on the opposite side of the road. Also shop workers from Northdown road Parking. Also abandoned cars that only move 3/4 times a month. Infact the whole is ridiculous something needs to be done. Cars are parked so close together that cars are getting damaged and in the event of a fire this could create a domino affect of cars on fire. Also I think that cars that have sat for a long period of time should be forced to move as there is a mechanic in sweyne road who has loads of cars and that haven't moved in years and you never see them being fixed. He must have at least 10 cars all parked up. Tdc come on sort it out.

John Sims2 years ago It seems to me that the whole problem could be solved if we had more traffic wardens in Thanet. They would not only make the roads safer but it would also mean, that where relevant, drivers would pay.With the system we have at the moment outlying car parks, such as the Marina car park in Ramsgate, do not seem to be checked. This means that day after day I have noted that as many as ten motor homes park overnight without paying.During the summer at weekends cars park in Broadstairs on pavements, on double yellow lines and across peoples drives. It appears that traffic wardens do not work on Sundays.In Thanet we have miles of yellow lines on the roads costing thousands of pounds to maintain but it seems that nobody is enforcing the law. It seems that anyone can park in disabled parking bays. On the sea front in Ramsgate outside the tunnels motor homes are parked all night, when even with a blue badge you are only allowed to park in disabled parking place for thee hours.In Ramsgate ,Thanet Council spent money putting up signs on Victoria Parade to inform motor home drivers that they must not park overnight. Within weeks the notices were being ignored.If Thanet really wants to get to grips with this problem they need to employ more traffic wardens who work seven days a week covering the whole of Thanet not just the town centres a couple of days a week. The alternative is to do nothing and let the area grind to a halt.

T. McElligott2 years ago None of the parking review suggestions will make a difference unless Thanet District Council employs lots of Parking Enforcement Officers. They will need at least 20 to cover all towns and villages in Thanet, especially with all the new homes being built and all the extra vehicles that will bring in. It is already chaos in Thanet a lot of the time with dangerous parking seen daily on street and on pavements by persistent offenders, TDC need to get a grip on this 'now', and as their top priority within the Parking office.You can have all the parking regulations you like but it seems ridiculous to think they can enforce all this without a largely increased team of parking officers. Regulations just on their own are simply not enough to make any difference at all.

J Moxey2 years ago We note daily examples of poor, dangerous and idiotic parking in and around our town and a scant visibility of any enforcement. Cars parked on pavements, obstructing junctions, on Bus Stops, Outside Schools - on yellow zig-zags and blatant misuse of Blue Permits and continue bafflement that this easy source of income for our Council seems largely ignored. Canterbury makes a big issue of the funds raised via parking charges in the city- Would our Council consider employing Traffic Wardens VISIBLY patrolling our streets and enforcing the law. Once the cost of employment is covered the balance would be a source of useful funding - YES?I raised those issue in connection with weekend parking at The Lanthorne pub- received a feeble reply stating there would be enforcement - but I have YET to see evidence of this.....

Bradley Milburn2 years ago When the parking enforcement team was operating at full strength, not only were restrictions such as school zones and yellow lines kept clear, time restricted parking bays had a steady turnover which is beneficial for shoppers, but the amount of revenue generated made sure that the department was self funded. TDC seems to have trouble retaining Civil Enforcement Officers. They play a vital role and their part in keeping thanet moving should be rewarded with a higher salary.

Julie W 2 years ago Residents should get a discount on parking . It would not be that hard to link your car reg . The cost of parking in many cases is more expensive than London. I know tourists are good for the area but they cost locals money with the clean up of roads beaches etc . So charging them more to park seems fair . Visitors to the beach seem to bring everything with them bbq food drinks . So they don’t always spend money here .

Estelle Morris2 years ago Herbert Place and the area around Mill Lane carpark (centre of Margate town, at the back of Mcdonalds etc. and through the alley) is constantly full of cars coming and going (Deliveroo / Uber Eats drivers). They speed down the cul-de-sac and park all over the yellow lines, on the Peacocks spaces, in the loading bay for the rubbish collection and in the turning space at the bottom of the ramp. The parking here is not enforced and it's becoming a free for all - there are sometimes 20+ cars all parked side by side and jamming up the road, with people hanging out smoking. Recently a car drove into a brick wall causing lots of damage and the bricks are still piled up. Residents and tourists use this area to get to town and it's so unsightly and dangerous with this many cars.

Jay H2 years ago More residents parking is needed in broadstairs. there isn’t enough residential on street parking for those of us who live close to the high street. I can purchase a resident permit which is approx £70 PA but I cannot even use the spaces this gives me as they are taken up by pay and display users, local businesses who park on my street etc. this particularly affects the Pierremont park area. I routinely have to park 2/3 roads away from the property I live in as local businesses such as Wards or Miles and Barr park on my road, or pay and display holders popping to the local shops. More needs to be done for residents!

Stella Taylor2 years ago Parking in Broadstairs should be more available, I am a resident on Broadstairs Road and have great difficulty driving out of my drive when the schools are on and any sport activities happening! Along with the local church visitors, some days the road is blocked with parked cars and other traffic! I suggest double yellow lines put on the side of the houses going in to Broadstairs, this would allow traffic to pass more easily and also stop people parking over drives!

samara jones-hall2 years ago Strategic Priority 5 of the Local Plan requires TDC to deliver the infrastructure required to support existing communities and new development, in particular to promote development patterns and behaviour that will minimise the need to travel or use private cars to access services and amenities and to facilitate provision of direct walking and cycling routes to reduce potential congestion, noise and pollution.A direct walking route is an existing pavement. To take away existing pavements from walkers for use by cars is in direct contravention of Strategic Priority 5 of the Local Plan (adopted). I object to pavement parking.
