Parking in Thanet

In December 2023 we announced plans to create a new parking strategy for Thanet. One that sets out the future of parking requirements for the whole of the district, balancing residents’ needs with growing visitor numbers.

As part of this, specialist highway and transportation consultants were appointed to prepare a strategic review of parking across the district.

The consultants analysed parking data and an engagement exercise followed. This was to gather feedback from members of the public.

A number of engagement events were held during the development phase of the strategy. The sessions were a mix of virtual and in-person meetings, with some open to the general public. Targeted stakeholder sessions were also held, involving local businesses and Councillors.

Phase one included surveys for residents and businesses. It was open until Sunday 10 March 2024.

The Phase two survey ran from Monday 15 July to Sunday 1 September 2024.

We are now asking for feedback on the draft Residential Parking Policy. The survey will be open from Friday 21 November to Friday 19 December 2025.

Thanet District Council announced plans to produce a district-wide parking strategy.

The parking survey allowed people to comment on various aspects of parking within the district.

There was one for residents and another for people who own or manage a business in Thanet.

The survey took no more than 10 minutes to complete and enabled the consultants to collate data on parking in Thanet, based on your input.

It was live from Monday 29 January 2024, for 5 weeks, and closed on Sunday 10 March 2024, following an extension of one week.

Please note that the surveys are now closed.

People could also make suggestions or comments here on Your Voice Thanet which were shared for the consultants to review.

To support the overall aims of the project, a drop-in session happened on Tuesday 6 February in Margate.

This helped residents who required further information on the project to speak to members of the project team face-to-face.

User 5645372 years ago Milton, Byron and Poet's corner, extremely busy during the day with non residents using these roads to park rather than paying to park in town, particularly those who work in the council offices and high street, coming from Milton/Byron into Poets is difficult due to tight angle and blind spot. This is made worse by those who continually park on the double yellow lines on the bends. Cars also speed at excessive speeds down Milton Ave.

User 2039182 years ago If you want the shops to carry on trading we need your support for this I believe first half hour free and a 1 hour charge of 50p if you wish to stay longer would help us to carry this on,Every year is getting harder to carry on and if parking charges keep going up in the thanet towns shops will disappear more and more.Also Birchington is a village surely this should not be comparable to the 3 main towns in Thanet with the parking charges.

Trevor Jarvis2 years ago What is TDC going to do this year to help the residents with the influx of day tripper causing havoc on our narrow roads on the estate, we need some double yellow lines on corners and some seasonal single yellow lines to run from Easter to September between 10am and 18.00 7 days a week and enforcement to allow residents, buses, delivery vehicles and especially emergency services to attend any incident

User 7623122 years ago I grew up in Ramsgate and remembe the bustling town centre in the 60's and 70's. To park in Cavendish Street car park today costs £3.20 for 2 hours. To park in Westwood Cross Mall car park costs nothing. It is not surprising that these days Ramsgate town centre is a shadow of its former self. W.H. Smith has jusr closed and Barclays Bank in Queen Street will shortly close. This is a slow death for what was once a thriving town centre. Bringing back the weekly market will help a bit on Fridays but much more needs to be done to bring the town centre back to life including reviewing the cost of parking.

Jill Saunder-Airs2 years ago Where I used to live, we had residents' parking. I bought a parking permit every year. I write, because anyone who has not lived in a residents' parking area may not realise it does not mean you can park outside your house. A whole area is a zone and you are entitled to park in that zone. However, there could well be more cars than there is tarmac, so if all other residents are home and their cars parked in that zone, you STILL cannot park near your house, or even in your zone and you will probably have to pay, into the bargain, for parking in a street where your parking permit does not allow you. I am afraid I do not know the answer, except creating a lot more car parks, which I can't imagine happening! Certainly all new-builds should have the rule that they are not permitted UNLESS they also have car parking spaces.One thing which could and should happen is to get the multi-storey car-park cleaned up and made into a much more welcoming environment. I feel embarrassed to have to ask my visitors to park there as it stands.

michael goodall2 years ago Illegally parked cars when the Granville cinema has a show on , parking over the belmouth drive to the carpark of Poldark Court , Belmont Rd, Ramsgate, making it difficult sometimes for Ambulances to enter and exit the car park , parking opposite Victoria Rd and outside the Granville cinema so cars exiting Victoria Rd onto Victoria parade have to pull onto oncoming traffic from Wellington crescent, cars parked Illegally on the corners of roads in the vicinity of the Granville cinema, The Traffic warden I spoke to a long time age said to me they have been told not to ticket cars near the Cinema/ Theater, not enough dater room for photos, I have many

User 5280802 years ago Since Botany Bay was heavily advertised in national press, tubes in London etc, this area has attracted hundreds of visitors inthe summer months. However the issue of parking (and other facilities) has not addressed. It is very unfair that local residents (especially the elderly and those with young families) have not been able to park in the road outside their own properties especially in the summer season. As a result, many drives are now paved which exacerbates water runoff problems and reduces the biodiversity in the area to the detriment of us all. It would be good to see spaces marked for residents only with the associated parking permits. Introducing parking fees for visitors in line with London policies would maybe bring in sufficient funds to pay for a parking enforcement officer. Two roads in the area already do this and the scheme has been very sucessful at improving traffic flow and access for emergency vehicles.

User 5664402 years ago To advertise Botany Bay in nonsensical when there is not parking facilities and very few businesses to benefit bringing in extra revenue to the area.The local area gets gridlocked, on a bus route, also coaches coming down. Parking can be a nightmare on busy days and leave a lot of mess.Having Parking Wardens may deter some but not all, many would risk a ticket as cost of cheap day out.In 2022 there where electronic signs up to inform visitors approaching that there was no parking available and diverting to Margate Sands or Viking Bay or Joss Bay, where there is parking available they can pay for and more businesses to benefit the local economy.

User 5929222 years ago During the summer months residents cannot park outside their house or even get in an out of their drive if they have one because of the influx of day visitors. Resident parking permits and active traffic wardens would prevent this. It could be run on fixed months of the year for application as in Eastern Esplanade Broadstairs. Gridlock happens several times a day and cars drive down pavements to try and escape causing potential danger to pedestrians.

This is a conservation area and residents are resorting to turning their front gardens into parking spaces with dropped curves. Permits would generate income for the council and would remove non-resident vehicles from our overcrowded roads. I am in the process of organising a petition

Mark Cutts2 years ago We very rarely go down Ramsgate town, we don't go because of the lack of parking, the multi story is disgusting and expensive and we'll only go to get chips, Ramsgate town needs a 20mins drop off area or a short stay where you can pop to the shop or collect something, the other thing is adequate enforcement across many areas, ensuring people park appropriately and finally those who have drives but decide to park on street and block the views of others when getting on and off there own drives.

Brian Smith Stewart2 years ago It's important when it comes into law enforce parking on pavements and dropped kerbs to keep clear for disabled residents and eyesight problems and families with children instead of going on to dangerous highways in towns more revenue for TDC as enforcement doesn't happen now wardens are not interested make use of CCTV cameras in margate.it will become a power for TDC not local police as they don't do anything about these important issues for residents hope this can solve there issues.
