Ramsgate Identity - A High Street Heritage Action Zone Project

High Street Heritage Action Zones (HSHAZ) are part of a government funded programme, administered by Historic England, to unlock the potential of high streets across England.

Ramsgate has been designated as a High Street Heritage Action Zone, including Harbour Street and a lower section of the High Street. Funding has been allocated until March 2024 including for work to help market and promote the High Street.

As part of the Ramsgate High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) scheme, work has been undertaken to understand the current status of Ramsgate High Street and what can be done to re-engage local residents with the high street and support the success of local businesses and operators.

One of the recommended actions is to create an overarching ‘identity’ for Ramsgate, to be owned and used by the town, for the benefit of all. We are aware of the many individuals and organisations that have businesses, activities and events in the town; an agreed identity will aim to provide an umbrella for this activity and would incorporate a set of values and a visual brand, promoting a coordinated approach.

We have engaged a local team, funded through the HSHAZ, to help us create three narrative and visual proposals. These are based on the recent consultation evidence collected as part of the Ramsgate Town Investment Plan, the Ramsgate Seafront Placemaking Scheme and others.

The three options are now open for voting by the public; we want to encourage as many people who live, work, study and love Ramsgate to vote for their favourite.

Once the voting period is over, the chosen ‘identity’ will be rolled out across the town and a toolkit will be available to local businesses and organisations to utilise should they choose to. The chosen identity logo will not replace any existing logos or branding, but work alongside them to provide visual connection.

From Pugin to the Ravensgate Arms, this symbol of magic seems to have watched over the town forever... and we hear the ravens are now on their way back!In this logo, we see the raven right in the middle of the R – a strong and grounding presence, full of symbolism, history and such a part of our name. But the raven reflects more than that for Ramsgate; they are an unusually generous type of bird, willing to share their food and resources.And, if you tilt your head slightly, a new image appears of another very beautiful side of Ramsgate where the water and the land stretch out in the warmth of the sun, echoing the undulating lines of Ramsgate’s nature and architecture, and reminding us how lucky we are to live in this special town by the sea.

Created from a variety of shapes with dual meanings, this image incorporates the huge breadth of Ramsgate’s personality and heritage that people love so much.What can you see hidden within the R? Do you see the sea, the sun and a ship’s sail? Or do you see the orange brick archways that stand along the harbour’s edge? Perhaps you see some of the town’s wonderful architecture; the doorways, the windows, the clock faces, the church steeple? Or maybe you see the circle of a close-knit, caring community and the triangle that represents the three ‘H’ aspects of the town? Depending on who you are, and what you want from Ramsgate, it’s all waiting within this logo.

The artist’s own mission is to create generously positive statements around Ramsgate that do nothing more than start conversations and raise a smile. He cares deeply about the town and wants to share that passion with whoever sees his work. And this is a courageous statement; boldly saying that we are as a place where greatness can thrive. The door is open, both as an invitation to come on in, and as an arrow towards an elevated future.
