A new parish council for Margate

Margate is currently the only town in Thanet that doesn’t have a Town or Parish Council.

Parish councils:

  • are made up of elected Councillors who represent the local community
  • have the power to raise money through the local Council Tax, known as a ‘precept’. This pays for the delivery of services like parks and play areas, supplementing those provided by the district or county council
  • they can improve quality of life and wellbeing in the local community

We ran engagement activities in August and September 2025, to find out if people living and working in Margate were keen to set up a new Parish Council.

The results showed that there is a strong appetite for a new Parish Council for the town. The next stage is to explain why we are proposing to set up a new Parish Council and how it would work.

You can read the proposals and fill out a short feedback survey on the website.
