Housing Allocations Policy
Thanet District Council provides homes for social and affordable rent to local people who need them.
We have a Housing Register that people can apply to join. We use a banding system to help decide housing priority. Once someone is on the register they can bid for somewhere to live.
Applicants are assessed based on their housing need. This includes the number of bedrooms they require as well as any medical and welfare needs.
The Housing Allocations Policy sets out how all social and affordable rented housing is allocated. This includes the properties that the council owns. Registered social housing providers must also advertise a percentage of their properties to people on the Housing Register.
The draft policy sets out how people can be eligible for this housing. It also explains what help people on the Housing Register can expect from the council.
We are reviewing and updating this policy. You can read the draft policy here.
A number of changes have been suggested. The aim is to make sure that the policy is fair for everyone. You’re invited to feed back on the proposed changes.
Phases
Preparing the draft policy
During this phase, we reviewed the existing Housing Allocations Policy and identified proposed changes. The draft policy was presented to the council's Overview and Scrutiny Panel and Cabinet in December 2024. It was agreed that members of the public would be invited to give their feedback on the draft consultation.
