Thanet Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan

The Thanet Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (Thanet CWIP) aims to create safe and easy routes for everyone to cycle and walk, connecting different areas across the district. Improving walking and cycling routes will help increase road safety, improve air quality and health, make places more accessible, boost the local economy and help Thanet reach its net zero goals.

Summary of route priorities

Appendix 1 outlines the route audits that were carried out during the project development phase.

Appendix 2 outlines how the proposed routes will be prioritised.

Thanet District Council has been working on this Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (CWIP), since 2021 in partnership with Sustrans, a charity focused on making it easier for everyone to walk and cycle. There has been a lot of public engagement during that time.

People are now invited to share their feedback on the draft Thanet CWIP, including the proposed network of walking and cycling routes, and the priorities within the plan.

The online survey is open until 5pm on Sunday 17 August 2025.

There are opportunities to find out more at five public drop-in events across Thanet:

  • Wednesday 9 July - Broadstairs Library (1pm to 5pm)
  • Friday 11 July - Birchington Library (1pm to 5pm)
  • Wednesday 16 July - Royal Temple Yacht Club, Ramsgate (3pm to 7pm)
  • Wednesday 23 July - Thanet District Council Chamber (3pm to 7pm)
  • Thursday 24 July - Minster Village Hall (3pm to 7pm)

People who can’t complete the survey online can request a paper copy by calling 01843 577000.

Paper copies should be returned to Strategic Planning, Thanet District Council, Cecil Street, Margate CT9 1XZ, to arrive by 5pm on Sunday 17 August 2025.

The consultation documents are also available to view at the public libraries in Birchington, Broadstairs, Margate, Minster and Ramsgate, during normal library opening hours.

Project development

1 July 2021 23:00 - 4 July 2025 23:00

The council first commissioned Sustrans to carry out an audit of Thanet’s main walking and cycling routes in 2021. A series of reports were produced, which have been brought together in one draft document, the Thanet Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan.

There were public engagement activities held at various points throughout the process.
