Antisocial behaviour PSPO | 2026

The council has a key role to play in making Thanet a safe place to live, visit and work, and tackling antisocial behaviour continues to be a high priority. Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) were introduced under the Antisocial Behaviour and Policing Act 2014, to ensure public spaces are areas that are free from antisocial behaviour.

Public Spaces Protection Orders give the council a wide-range of flexible powers to help tackle antisocial behaviour locally. The council, supported by the local police, is proposing a PSPO which aims to tackle the misuse of alcohol and related antisocial issues that are impacting local communities. It will be looking to implement the orders for three years and it is keen to hear your views on them and to take them into account before making a final decision on whether to implement a new PSPO.

The council has undertaken significant work to gather evidence, including witness statements, to ensure the proposed restrictions are justified and address the concerns raised by the local community.

The previous PSPO agreed in July 2025 was not implemented following a threat of legal challenge. The council has since rigorously reviewed its evidence base, including witness statements and sought specialist legal advice to ensure the current proposals are robust.
